Is there anything good about COVID-19? Well, maybe… Once you move beyond the bad – something good can happen – and it did – because of you, our supporters and donors.
The NMFFC board launched a summer program to help kids stay active and involved while staying home. We invited foster parents to submit short, simple applications requesting up to $75 per child for fun activities at home.
We received requests for so many wonderful things – and reports from foster parents that the funding made a difference in the foster child’s ability to have fun over the summer and in the foster family’s ability to expand the activities for their children.
Imagine: A wading pool and water toys added to a backyard. Or mega-sized versions of board games on the lawn. Or bicycles to ride. Playing with beads and art supplies or activity centers and swings for toddlers. Your donations gave children in foster care a chance to experience different things and bring joy into their lives at a time when they are unable to have in-person visits with their biological families, a restriction particularly confusing and difficult for children in foster care.
A void was filled for more than 110 children because of your generosity. You helped bring light and laughter into their worlds, worlds that are unfortunately, more restricted and limited than before COVID-19.
So, YES, there can be something good that comes out of COVID-19, and the foster parents and children in their care are all thankful for your generosity. One young girl told her foster mom that “This treasure hunt game is awesome!” as she ran out the door to play again.
What a wonderful gift you have given to so many kids – THANK YOU!
