Birthdays may be a time of mixed emotions for children and youth in foster care who are not accustomed to being acknowledged or feeling special. We want to share love with kids who do not smile and laugh as often as they could by providing positive memories and celebrating their birthdays.
Children in foster care are away from their families and may have bounced around to different foster homes, missing out on a normal childhood milestone of being celebrated on what should be their very special day.
Older youth in foster care often face the challenge of living in a group home or residential treatment facility where, no matter how dedicated the staff, birthdays may be overlooked or treated as an afterthought. It is important to reinforce the value and beauty of every child. Let’s honor their unique and wonderful qualities by recognizing them on their special day.
It’s Your Birthday! will give each child or youth a gift chosen especially for them along with an age/interest appropriate book, and a personalized card.
We are starting with a pilot program. This program will serve 30 children and youth. If you know of a child or youth in foster care with a birthday in the months of April, May, or June, please tell us about them by requesting an It’s Your Birthday! box.
